Capt. Ken Kaio and Cory Vellalos were trolling on Ken's 30-foot Rad, the NATASHA K, a few miles from X-buoy on Oahu's North Shore when they located a school of tuna. A triple strike ensued and two were indeed tuna. The third was a 1,089-lb blue marlin that was foul-hooked by their aku lure! Amazingly, the 1/0 double hook held as they fought the marlin through the day. At the weigh-in, the marlin was so heavy that the tail rope cut through the tail bone and the marlin fell off the hoist and back into the water. It was retrieved then butchered on the spot.
