The Penn International reel was mated to a straight-butt Fenwick rod with oversized AFTCO guides. The leader was made of .035 wire and the hook was a 10/0 Mustad Sea Demon. The fight time was five hours and 20 minutes. The marlin ate a bridled aku (skipjack tuna) bait. The fish weighs 338 lbs more than the current (2003) IGFA world record for 80-lb test line.
