At first light, we caught a few akule to use for bait and immediately sent a live one out. Then we sat around all morning and waited. Finally, at around 10:30 a.m., I heard a short, loud run of the ratchet. Not really knowing what was going on, I scanned the water to see where the floater was. I was interrupted by another run, so I hurried to my pole and took a couple of fast cranks on the handle. The reel just took off!
The fish and I waged a back-and-forth battle for about 14 minutes. It finally broke the surface, and we were able to see that it was a big ulua (122 lbs, 8 oz). I slowly maneuvered it to the cliff where we were able to gaff it just before the hook popped out. We definitely got lucky this time!
