On November 29, 2020 I boarded DA MONICA accompanying friends Jessie Salvador, and Captain John Muncher. Despite using only 1-lb of weight, a strong current, and heavy winds, Captain Muncher kept Jessie and me positioned over the weights more than 1000 feet below. This enabled me to feel the strike and set the hook.
After a confident hookset, I started cranking the fish up from the depths. After about 10 minutes of fighting the fish, it was brought to the surface and hoisted out of the water.
In the process of bringing the fish in, it slipped off the hook! Had it not been for Captain Munchers quick reaction with the gaff, this fish and the state record wouldve been lost.
The fish weighed 5.7-lbs.
