This huge tilapia was caught at a pond in Wailoa State Park, and was weighed and witnessed at
S. Tokunaga Store in Hilo.
I caught it on November 20th while fishing for mullet, using an Okuma Hawaiian Custom Menpachi 10-foot 7-inch rod and a Daiwa BG 3000 reel, with 10-lb. Power Pro mainline. My rig had a 6-lb J-Line Fluorocarbon leader and it was floating with
limu for bait.
One of the guys at the State Park had seen the previous record tilapia being caught about 2 months ago, and he convinced me to get this fish weighed. Thanks Francis!
There are other bigger tilapia in that pond, and invasive fish like these need to be removed anyway. Give it a try! . . . Dexter Aoki
